Growing up surrounded by religious iconography I have always been attracted to the altars and saints of the Catholic faith. I grew up going to church on Sundays praying to my guardian angel before bed and having to thank God every day for another day of life. The older I got the more things happened that changed the way I saw religion and faith.
In this series of work, I wanted to put some skills I had learned in my year at San
Jose State University. I took the woodworking class with Shannon I started to
become more confident (sort of) with power tools. I set out to make some weird
things. Cartoon-like small sculptures. I wanted to add a sense of whimsy to the
materials. I never have understood why some materials are not seen as high art
materials. Why are only marble and ceramic sculptures seen as high art when
good work can be made with Sculpey oven-bake clay? My fascination with glitter and cellophane has only grown throughout the years. I want to keep creating with unconventional materials.
I know I am no longer a scared child, but I am trying to heal from open wounds.
